14" VS 16" - Getting ready for M4 MBP

Getting ready for M4 MacBook Pro

The Part-time Solopreneur

My work tool of choice is a 16" M1 Pro with 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD

I would upgrade to 32 GB when ordered it, but I already was waiting 89 days to get this M1 Pro in standard configuration.

I see low system memory warnings periodically so I would like to have more RAM and more processing power would help with video editing and live streams.

I almost upgraded to M3 Max and definitely should get M4 Max when that comes out. I expect that we will get it by the end of the year.

So here is an important question, which one to get?

14" or 16" MBP?

I'm quite sure that 16" is a better choice for developers and content creators and here is why:

  • A bigger screen is just better and when I'm outside of the home office I enjoy every extra inch I can get.
  • Better heat management
  • The battery is bigger, but also the screen, so they may last the same time, but bigger is better. Ok, this is not a real argument :)

14" would be better:

  • to use on planes, but I'm flying for vacations only and that is 3-4 trips in a year. So that would be dumb to optimize for 40h in a year.
  • if you carry it around all day every day and use it for a bit in many different places. That could be some salesperson or PM who goes around to meet customers or jumps between meetings. I'm just sitting for a few hours in a coffee shop or at home and do not move much.

So, even if I'm taking a look at 14" whenever I'm in AppStore I'm 99% sure that I'm getting 16" again.

Will keep the idea about 14" MBP for some day later when will retire from programming and become a moto vlogger traveling around the world.

P.S. If you need an excuse to upgrade from a "still good enough" M series machine, remember that this is a tool to earn money. So it is a good investment even if you can get only a 10% improvement in productivity.
